Shabbat (Sabbath)

(shab-BAHT) n. Shabbat; Sabbath; Day of rest. (Ex. 20:8). The Sabbath was set apart as a holy day (Gen. 2:3). The first festival of the Lord set apart as His appointed time (Lev. 23:3). Observed from sunset Friday evening to sunset Saturday evening, marked by rest, worship, and study. It is one of the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20:2-17; Deut. 5:6-21) The Sabbath is to be Kodesh or Holy (Ex. 20:9, 11b). The Sabbath is an everlasting covenant (Ex. 31:16-17). The Sabbath was not only commanded for Israel , but for everyone who chooses to partake in the same covenant (Isa. 56:6-7a). It was given to Jew and non-Jew for Oneg, joy or delight (Isa. 58:13). Oneg implies celebration, sharing time with loved ones, leisurely meals and relaxation. (Messianic Shabbat Siddur, Greenburg 1999)

Yeshua, our Messiah, honored this festival as found in Luke 4:16.

Challah bread is traditionally eaten on the Sabbath. Two challahs represent the double portion of manna gathered on the sixth day to provide food throughout the Sabbath.
